Where Do You Look?

Updated: May 16, 2024

In storms people react differently, but usually in some form of being frantic, panicking, or trying to fix the problem. When Jesus was in a storm with His disciples on a boat, he reacted differently as well.

He slept.

He stayed so secure in His knowledge of purpose that He wasn’t even woken up by water spraying into His face and being tossed about on a hard wooden boat! He didn’t budge. The disciples had to wake Him up!

We know this, but what is incredible is that the disciples wake Him up to help them. Think about that. They wake Him up because they know He can stop the storm.

If you’ve ever experienced a fear of flying and you notice a little more than usual turbulence, where do you look first? The flight attendants right? They know better than most if the turbulence is something to worry about or not. If they are still up and about, you drop your anxiety slightly. What’s my connection here?

The disciples knew Jesus was the answer and the answer was sleeping. Why wouldn’t that calm them down? They frantically woke up the one who could save them, neglecting to realize the response of Jesus gave them the answer they needed. Everything was under control.

The next time you find yourself in a hopeless and turbulent situation, look to Jesus, what is He doing? Is He sleeping, then rest. Is He praying (always), then pray. Is He marching into the battle, follow Him!

Just do what Jesus does and you will have the comfort, grace, and power Jesus has.
